Singharaja world Heritage Rain forest is largely
undisturbed most famous rainforest in Sri Lanka. This important forest is also
a Man and Biosphere Forest reserve. It is home to a large number of endemic
species. The word 'Sinharaja' means, Lion (Sinha) King (Raja), and it is
popular belief that the legendary origin of the Sinhala people is from the
union between a princess and the lion king who once lived in the forest. Sinharaja
Forest Reserve is bordering three districts of the island, namely Galle, Matara
and Ratnapura districts. The Rakwana Massif with its mountain ranges is part of
the area covered by Sinharaja rain forest. The average annual temperature of
Sinharaja is 23.6 C.
Annual rainfall is more than 2500mm.The rain fall is well distributed during
two monsoons, May to July and October to December.
